Will It Ever End?

Potty training is HORRIBLE!! I started out showing her with a doll how to use the potty, if she goes on the potty she gets a chocolate treat, a sticker and another piece to her "potty-pillar", so she was excited seeing all the neat rewards. A while ago we tried using "Pull-ups" but they were just glorified diapers and she didn't care if they got wet so we didn't stick to those, since diapers are easier and cheaper. So this time I put her in cloth training pants with plastic ones over them. The plastic pants kept her "accident" pretty well contained, so she didn't care about going in them either. So, I came to the conclusion that I should take off the plastic pants and will have to go cold turkey, letting her just get real messy if she doesn't go on the potty. The first couple days weren't too bad, only a few accidents... the issue is she WON'T tell me if she has to go, so the only time she does go on the potty is if I sit her on there and she just happens to go at the time. My issue with that is on average it takes anywhere OVER HALF AN HOUR for her to go! Today was the most frustrating because she went in her pull up at church today and so we sat her on the potty around 2:30... 3 hours after she went last and 1 hour after she had a bunch to drink at lunch... well, 2 HOURS and lots of power struggles later she STILL hadn't gone! So we got her up and thought for sure she'd pee on the floor, low and behold at 5:30 she still hadn't gone, so we tried again... since she's stopped napping she's not much for listening or sitting still after about 5:30, so after another half hour of sitting and power struggles we decided just to put her night time diaper on and put her to bed. She didn't go until 6:30!!! She held it for 7 hours!! How are you supposed to potty train when they can hold it that long!? But then also go twice in 3 hours other times!! Not to mention how do you ever get to leave the house without them wearing diapers or pull-ups?! I hate this. PLEASE leave comments or email me with ideas!!

Was she showing signs of readiness before? It sounds like she just isn't ready for it yet. You definitely don't want to make it a miserable experience for the both of you, and who needs any more power struggles with their toddler? Still, if you really do feel that she's ready, then you'll have to pretty much hole yourselves in for a good solid week (or so). You can try the stripping her down naked thing that Amy did. Good luck - I hope it works out for you guys!

She's ready, she just doesn't communicate... I read a big checklist of 18 things that means they are ready, she had all but 3, and all three of those had to do with her caring about being wet or dirty, she just doesn't. She could wear the same diaper for a week and not care at all. Normally her being on the potty doesn't have too many power struggles, and by all common sense she SHOULD have had to go yesterday, who holds it for 7 hours!?

I don't think my experience in potty training will help, but here it goes...Start by taking her outside to the backyard, set her down and say "go potty" and "good girl". Do that as soon as she eats or drinks anything. If she starts sniffing the carpet that is a good sign that she is about to go potty. Also, crating her at night is a big help, and cuts down on accidents on the carpet...Ooops, did I mention the only experience I have in potty training is for dogs? Oh well, good luck.

Remember this is the only thing she has any control over. It is hard to give up control on something - especially something so personal. Dont worry, she'll get it someday ;-)
